🔴 Now: Sánchez Calls Snap General Election
Spain to head to the polls on July 23 after terrible election night for the left.

In a shocking move, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on live television this morning that he is dissolving his Cabinet and calling for a snap general election on Sunday, July 23.
Sánchez said he made this decision based on the (really very bad) results obtained by PSOE, Podemos and leftist parties in the regional and municipal elections that took place yesterday in 12 of 17 regional parliaments.
It was a great night for the Partido Popular on Sunday, after the center-right party managed to win back territorial power throughout cities and regions in southern and eastern Spain (in the community and city of Madrid it managed absolute majorities, and also won cities like Valencia, Seville and Palma de Mallorca and regions like Aragón, Cantabria, La Rioja, Extremadura, Valencia and the Balearic Islands).
The Prime Minister’s decision was announced live to the surprise of pretty much everyone, as most political leaders, analysts, and pundits were saying they were certain this was not an option until earlier this morning.
This unexpected move of calling for an early election in July has immediately changed the conversation in the country from post-regional election analysis to scrambling to prepare for a national election in two months (especially when PP leaders last night said it wasn’t time to discuss that).
